Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf models herself after Septimus Warren Smith in her novel. They both had a life before their mental illness which they wish they could get back. Virginia lost her beloved life in the city surrounded by people and interesting things to do, while Septimus lost his youth and his friend and assumed lover, Evans. Both of them leave their spouse who they love or have come to love by committing suicide because their illness has taken over and they are losing their freedom.
Leonard Woolf
Leonard is like both Richard and Rezia in his wife's novel. He is a loving husband who is absorbed in his work that he doesn't pay enough attention to his wife to know that Virginia is not getting better. In Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa's husband, Richard, has an independent career and does not see that his wife is unhappy. Septimus's wife, Rezia cares for him constantly but is very embarrassed by his behavior when his mental illness shows in public. Leonard is fully aware of Virginia's mental illness which is why he is fighting her wishes to move back to London where she will be around people again.
Vanessa
Vanessa, Virginia's sister is also like Rezia in the same way as Leonard Woolf. She is fully aware of Virginia's mental problems and doesn't invite her to her home anymore in London. This is most likely because she is too embarrassed by her sister's problems to invite her into a large city where people will see her odd behavior. She also might be afraid of what being surrounded by people will do to her nerves.
